The mission of OmarShamsi.com is to explore and develop ideas, technologies, economic systems, creative works, and humanitarian efforts that can contribute to a more free, peaceful, prosperous, responsible, compassionate, and sustainable world.
The work is guided by several principles.
Protect Human Dignity
Human life should never be treated as disposable.
Genocide, slavery, apartheid, trafficking, exploitation, torture, and deliberate violence against innocent people should be opposed regardless of who commits them.
Pursue Truth
Truth should not belong to a political party, nation, religion, ideology, or civilization.
We should seek evidence, acknowledge uncertainty, correct mistakes, and remain willing to change our minds.
Practice Empathy
Before judging another person, try to understand their experience.
Understanding does not require agreement.
Empathy does not eliminate accountability.
It makes accountability more human.
Practice Reciprocity
Apply the standards we expect from others to ourselves.
If something is wrong when our opponent does it, it should remain wrong when our ally does it.
If something is unjust when done to us, it should remain unjust when done to someone else.
Defend Freedom
Freedom of conscience, thought, expression, association, and peaceful participation should be protected.
Freedom should be accompanied by responsibility rather than used as an excuse to exploit others.
Encourage Human Flourishing
Economic, technological, scientific, and social progress should ultimately serve human beings rather than reduce human beings to instruments of progress.
Build Bridges
The future should not be defined by permanent conflict between civilizations.
Western and Eastern societies can learn from one another without requiring cultural uniformity.
Religious and secular people can cooperate without requiring identical beliefs.
Political opponents can disagree without becoming enemies.
Turn Ideas Into Action
Research should lead to experimentation.
Philosophy should lead to character.
Compassion should lead to service.
Ideas should eventually become useful.
And useful things should improve lives.
